In Costa Rica, there has been a growing interest to use pineapple fiber from plant, for which current processes need to be improved or new processes need to be developed, with emphasis on drying methods. This work presents the design and evaluation of the behavior of a prototype portable solar dryer in four sites of Costa Rica. The design describes the main parts of the dryer, as well as how they were constructed. The behavior was evaluated according to temperature and relative humidity inside e outside the chamber, and the influence of direct and indirect solar radiation. In order to achieve improved dryer efficiency, a dehumidifier was used to control relative humidity, and a heating system was implemented during the hours of low temperature, low solar... |

Viticulture in Brazil has been growing in importance in recent years. In the State of São Paulo, a significant percentage of the production is basically destined to in natura consumption and, more recently, much effort has been made by institutions to revitalize the viticulture in the State. Among fungal diseases, the downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) is one of the main diseases affecting this crop in Brazil, with extreme damage effects on its production. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of the downy mildew on grape under the climatic conditions of the State of São Paulo, based on a mathematical model and using Geographical Information System - GIS tools. The study considered the months from September to April, a period in which... |

ABSTRACT Lactuca sativa seeds are highly sensitive to climate conditions; thus, they should be stored securely to maintain their qualitative and quantitative characteristics. Studies on hygroscopicity aim to decrease possible changes in agricultural products under specific environmental conditions. Accordingly, this study aims to develop an appropriate mathematical model to represent the desorption isotherms of Lactuca sativa seeds. The hygroscopic equilibrium was achieved using a static-gravimetric method at temperatures of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 °C and water activity in the range 0.11-0.96. Six mathematical models were fitted to the experimental data of the equilibrium moisture content of Lactuca sativa seeds. The best model was chosen based on the... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the impacts that climate change may cause on the development and evapotranspiration of cowpea, in semi-arid climate region of Northeast Brazil. The study was conducted in the municipalities of Apodi, Ipanguaçu and Mossoró, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. In order to evaluate the influence of climate change on crop water consumption, changes in air temperature and relative humidity were simulated using the PRECIS climate model. Two scenarios of emissions were evaluated based on the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: a pessimistic named A2 and an optimistic B2. The duration of the crop cycle showed an average reduction of 14 and 23 days for the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios,... |

Mycotoxin-producing fungal growth commonly reported from traditional maize storage system in southwestern Ethiopia. Un-safe moisture content at loading and non-climatically controlled nature of gombisa results in mycoflora growth and development on maize in storage system. Therefore, this paper was aimed to develop a photovoltaic driven ventilation system fitted to modified gomibsa for natural air in-bin drying of on-cobs-maize and increase the shelf life of the product. Modified gombisa was constructed from locally available materials for the current experiment. An appropriate fan type and size, humidistat set at >70% and two 20 Wp photovoltaic panels were used for ventilation purpose, fan control and power the fan, respectively. In total 1.76 m3 of... |

Leaf wetness duration (LWD) is a key parameter in agrometeorology because it is related to plant disease occurrence. As LWD is seldomly measured in a standard weather station it must be estimated to run warning systems for schedule chemical disease control. The objective of the present study was to estimate LWD over turfgrass considering different models with data from a standard weather station, and to evaluate the correlation between estimated LWD over turfgrass and LWD measured in a 'Niagara Rosada' vineyard, cultivated in a hedgerow training system, in Jundiaí, São Paulo State, Brazil. The wetness sensors inside the vineyard were located at the top of the plants, deployed at an inclination angle of 45º and oriented southwest, with three replications.... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to obtain and evaluate thermodynamic properties and hygroscopic equilibrium isotherms of urunday seeds as a function of air relative humidity and temperature, as well as identify the best-fitted mathematical models for adsorption phenomenon. A static-gravimetric method was used to obtain hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content. Seeds were placed in airtight containers with different saturated saline solutions for relative humidity control. These were then kept in BOD incubator chambers at 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C. Hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content decreased as temperature increased, for the same water activity. The Sigma-Copace model best-fitted seed adsorption data for equilibrium water activity intervals between 0.1129 and... |

ABSTRACT Knowledge on sorption isotherms is important for predicting drying and storage processes of a product. A sorption isotherm can be generated from two processes: desorption and adsorption. The lag between these two curves is called hysteresis. Static method was used to obtain the equilibrium moisture content of paddy rice grains, in different temperature (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 ± 1°C) and relative humidity (between 11 and 76% ± 2%) conditions. Equilibrium moisture content data were correlated with eight mathematical models and. The Chung Pfost model had the best fit to the experimental data. Desorption and adsorption isotherms, represented by the Chung Pfost model, showed a sigmoidal shape, characteristic of type II curve. Equilibrium moisture... |

During incubation of chicken embryos, environmental conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration, must be controlled to meet embryonic requirements that change during the different phases of embryonic development. In the current review, the effects of embryo temperature, egg weight loss, and CO2 concentration on hatchability, hatchling quality, and subsequent performance are discussed from an embryonic point of view. In addition, new insights related to the incubation process are described. Several studies have shown that a constant eggshell temperature (EST) of 37.5 to 38.0°C throughout incubation results in the highest hatchability, hatchling quality, and subsequent performance. Egg weight loss must be between 6.5 and 14.0%... |
